The History

What is an INDABA?

INDABA (ɪnˈdɑːbə) is a Zulu and Xhosa word meaning
“a meeting to discuss an important topic” and calls
together a gathering of people at the right time, place
and mindset to discuss the right issues that are for
them, by them, and about them.

INDABA

Origin

An indaba is an important conference held by the izinDuna (principal men) of the Zulu and Xhosa peoples of South Africa. (Such meetings are also practised by the Swazi, who refer to them using the close cognate indzaba.)

Indabas may include only the izinDuna of a particular community, or they may be held with representatives of other communities.

Modern Day Application

The Indaba emphasizes “tru-tru talk” and acknowledges that we all have something important to say.

By hosting and attending an annual Indaba, we encourage the community and its members to participate and reflect on the topic at hand.
